I went through this once. It came down to what do we really need? In the end it boiled down to a portable Briggs 5400 ($350 on sale), it runs my fridge and A/C. If one becomes too much, just unplug it. While it sounds like work, and it is, when that little engine ever blows the expense is next to nothing. Vs- My nieghbor who had a Genset installed, and his wife burned it up using her hair drier. Twice.
I've maintained commercial generators for 20 years as an operating engineer. The bigger they are, the bigger they break, and repairs will KILL you.
