It was probably 2 or 3 years ago the whole Mayan calendar ending thing really took off. That's when i decided to do some research into it and stop paying attention to the talking heads on TV. I then took it upon myself to inform others around me the truth about that calendar. I believe we entered the 14th long cycle, meaning that calendar 'ended' 13 times prior to Dec 21st 2012. The Mayans has many different calendars and notions for calendars. The 5125 yr cycle is know as their piktun calendar which has yet to come to a full revolution, the next piktun won't start until Oct. 13th 4772. I can only hope by that time we have mastered the ability of space travel.
As for the Dec 21st 2012 calendar reset, that is what the Mayans called a b'ak'tun calendar, approximately 394 years long. The reason the hysteria was created by the world ending on Dec 21st 2012, was because of a transcription that was translated to say that the two Mayan Gods created the world to roam in the beginning, in order to preserve their legacy they made man in their image with mud, but man crumbled, so the gods destroyed the world. The second time they made man from wood, but men had no souls and they were disloyal to the creators, so the gods destroyed the world again with rain. This is important because the Mayans calculated the Gods destroyed the 3rd world on Aug 11th 3114 BC, or on the b'ak'tun calendar 13.0.0.0.0
That b'ak'tun date would repeat itself on Dec 21st 2012. So archeologists originally believed the Mayans were talking about the world being destroyed on Dec 21st, 2012. But after the full translation of the transcript was done, they learned that Mayans Gods created a 4th world where man was made from maize (corn) and that is the world we live in today. Not to mention other writings speaking of major astrological and religious prophecies of their Mayan gods returning to the 4th world after Dec 21st 2012 led researchers to believe that the Mayans believe their gods would not destroy 4th world as it was a successful world as long as their creators legacy lived on.
Of course, this is their religious beliefs, not that of any other religions in the world. The Mayan religion is probably the most exploitable religion based on the way overblown prophecy of the world ending.
