My fishing buddies are black labs - best dogs ever. Love the water, very intelligent, and devoted. I got mine from a quality breeder down here. Thanks for avoiding the puppy mills. Good luck. Here's their Christmas photo:

By the way, here's a great video on dog training. Actually the whole series from Willow Creek Kennels is worth watching, but this one gives you a good start:

Ya I had a mini weiner dog, she had lots of back problems once she hit 8 years old. Large dogs like labs are my favorite, but not sure how I will be able to haul them around on long trips and what not with kids and other stuff, but might have to try. Beagles are ok, I use to hunt them back when I lived in AR. Nothing against them, just not what I am wanting. Looked at some Long haired Jacks today, but no go, they have some birth defects, born with no tail at all. This usually leads to bad hips early on. Seen it done that already.

Got a lead on a real nice Doberman, going to check it out tomorrow. They are a larger dog but not as big as a lab. Kind of hoping for a border collie, or a jack like I use to have. That Jack I had was awesome, one in a million dog. Still have not found another like him.

Yea I have seen my share of puppy mills especially here in MO, not to far from me are a few, and they are sad to see.

Dobermans are great dogs. Very, very smart and want to be with you all the time. That's why they're called Velco dogs.

This is the rescue organization I volunteer at Illinois Doberman Rescue | Doberman Adoption | Rescue Assistance We specialize in Dobermans, although we'll take in and adopt out any breed.

Yea I hear ya, I tried that last year but the dog had some issues and would not adjust to the house, he was a free wonder-er and did not want to be tied up, put up, or housed.

Yeap I looked there for a long time. The one I have found and just found out tonight that the owner was going to let me be the new owner, she is needing a new home because the family has a newborn and no room for her, and they are moving to KC in a condo with even less room and no yard at all. So as of right now I have found a new companion, just got to see if she is going to like riding in the boat with me and going fishing. Cant imagine why she wouldnt! but you never know.

Thanks everyone for your assistance in locating some dogs and for all the tips and advice.
