My Dad had it on his big toe and would get a prescription from the Dr and would be gone in a couple of days. The med is very hard on your stomach so quit taking it as soon as the gout is gone. EB

One you get it, it never goes away. All you can do is try to minimize the occurrence. My dad had it and Paul has it and I've seen them both miserable. My dad's always affected his foot. Paul's first experience was in his knee and kept him off work for 2 weeks - couldn't bend it, couldn't put any weight on it and I've never seen swelling like that. Eat cherries, drink cherry juice, you'll get the most benefit from the dark cherries. Shellfish are notorious for prompting flares. Talk to your doc - Paul takes Allopurinol daily to reduce the number of flares and then takes Indomethacin (this is the stuff that's hard on your stomach) when he has a flare.

i get it in my feet, cherries have been the best thing i have found other than going to doctor. GNC sells a black cherry concentrate supplement. it works pretty good for me i can usually tell when it is starting to flare up i start taking the capsule and drinking cran-cherry juice and doesn't seem to get to bad.

Best thing to do is go to the doctor and get a cortisone shot. Then start taking allopurinol everyday. There is a new pill called Uloric but it didn't do any better for me than Allopurinol and it was a lot higher.

I went to the doctor two years ago with a bad case of it. I got a shot and a bottle of pills but it came back a few weeks later. I started taking 1000mg of vitamin C per day after researching it on the internet and haven't had a flair up since.
