I live in Kentucky about 47 miles north of the border. One thing to check is Taxes. While Tennessee does not have an income tax it DOES have what they call a Hall Tax which is 6% on all investment interest and dividends. Kentucky does not tax many retirement incomes, but check to make sure if your particular income meets the criteria to be tax free if you decide to wander north of the TN/KY line. And Tennessee has some hellacious sales taxes. There is a 7% State Sales Tax and many cities add an additional Sales Tax to that. Before I retired I worked at a Lowe's HIW just over the line in Murray KY and TN builders would drive to us to avoid the 7 1/2% Sales Tax in TN (KY Sales Tax is 6%).
