Nice post Gene, Although I am only 62 years old, I remember a lot of that. We lived next door to the neighborhood store and rented the house from them.

I had the pleasure of knowing my great-grandfather(1898-1998)....he almost made 100.....chewed tobacco most of his life and spoke only French.....He helped build basin levee after flood of 1927....He lived just north of Henderson.
Mo if you like Civil War history, you should visit the area we moved to in Tn. Shilow battlefield is just a few miles away with many markers and info. Many thousands killed. We have just started to exploring it. Going to be a reenactment the first weekend of April with a nightime glow in the cemetary area. We are going , heard it's awesome and eerie at the same time. Lot's of museums and interprative centers in the area. Of course, most of the people here are still pulling for the south. lol

LIKE! The battle of Shiloh, a major event in American history. Not be forgotten as far as I'm concerned.

Being an Air Force brat, lived in Tennessee for a very short while. I recall (very young at the time) going into a laundry mat with my mother and my little sister. My mother saw a sign in the front of the laundry mat when we came in the door that said "whites only" in a certain section there. Being from Texas, she put the white laundry in that section because she didn't know better. The rest went in the back for the "colored". We just sat there while laundry was doing it's thing while some of the local folks were looking at us funny. We did that a lot while there. I recall though, it sure was fun to go next door at Woolworth's to look at the baby turtles they had for sale.

I forgot about that, thanks for the post.

Yeah JR, way back. I'm almost, as they say, "older than dirt".

Mo, you speak of your grandfather. I'm only 2 generations from the civil war. My Dad was born in 1915 and his dad, my Grandfather, was born at the close of the civil war in 1865. He lived to be only a couple of months shy of 105. Talk about change in his lifetime. He predated the automobile and airplane and died the year a man stepped on the moon.

I think it's cool to have known a man that was born in the 1800's.
He(great grandfather), could have spoken to a Confederate veteran from St Martin parish in early 1900's.
Yes Mr Gene, it brings the war between the states a lot closer.....

    Hey PPG,

So you go back too Genesis 1?

My Dad was born April 1919.A child/teen during the depression. He remembers the veterans of WWI. Did odd jobs for their widows.

Grandpa was born early 1890's. Like your Grandpa saw the automobile development and man walking on the moon etc. He passed in the late 70's.

Here's a link to a website my uncle on my mothers side made. The Leland Family of Virginia, 1744 - 2000. My Grandpa on Mom's side graduated from West point in 1925. Served in France during WWI also Panama.

There's a link to the Lee connection Robert E. that is.

    Check it out.
