The best time to propagate figs from cuttings is in the Spring just as the buds are breaking. Breaking a branch and sticking it in the ground where you want it to grow works just fine. To insure you get a tree you might stick 2 or 3 cuttings in the same place to increase you chances. You can always dig out the ones you don't need and give them to a friend.
