I know some Byrnsides from Union Parish, no Burnsides from Newelton. I only know two people from Newelton, one is married to a friend of mine and the other is some girl whose name I forgot long ago. My grandpa kept a trailer at Yucatan and he caught a lot of fish there back in his day. I knew a guy who grew up on the lake, his dad was a commercial fisherman. Said they slept in a tent at times and at night he could feel moccasins crawling across his legs in bed. He said as long as you didn't move much the snake would leave you alone.

I think I would have trouble not moving with a snake crawling across me.

No, those Burnsides I was referring to were farmers, and I used to fish Yucatan with them back in the late 1950's. Most of them are long gone now, but one of them still might be around. Anyway, I appreciate the come-back. It is a pretty lake and back then had some monster bluegills in it.
On another note, I don't believe I would have slept in a tent out there the second time if the cottonmouths were that bad!

Sneakypete, we probably passed each other on the lake at Yucatan or St. Joe back in the late 50's....also fished Eagle lake at Vicksburg.....I lived in Jackson, Miss. back then ....I must have been around 19 or 20.....I have never seen bream the size of those we used to catch.....that spoiled me so bad that I hardly go after them anymore because most I see are just too small to fool with.....

    Hey Underradar -
Judging from that remark, the lake must still be a "live" oxbow. That's good - not too many of them left in Louisiana, and it's probably why the fishing has stayed good for so long.
    Catch a bunch!
