I and a friend from work went out for some crappie today and had a great time. He had never broke the 1 lb mark for crappie--but blew it away tonight! The hump was red hot for the first hour. Charlie caught the 4 largest fish of the evening...including personal doubles (15.25"=2.28 lbs; 14.5"= 1.89 lbs).
Two nice fish came off the pvc and a few off a spot that normally produces 10-12" fish--this time, we pulled 5 consecutive fish 11.75-13.75"...including one that appeared to be full of eggs. Go figure. She was 11.75 and 1.09 lbs!
Again, I want to wish everyone an independent 4th of July! Count each one as if it were your last!
I'll post to big fish pics in the next couple days.

First, a personal best...17" !! Not quite my heaviest, and still no 3lb club, but wow--so that's what one looks like! I called my parents to give them the news. My mom reminded me that I was only a couple inches longer when I was born. She would say that.
Now the story...The fish and game officer was checking licenses and moving from boat to boat. He approached my boat just a couple minutes after I landed doubles 2.80 lbs and 1.72 lbs. I had just plopped the smaller of the two back in the lake, but he was off plane as I was putting the second, much larger fish into the lake. He couldn't believe I would let something like that go. He offered to give it a better home (in his frypan) and I agreed. I caught a 1.94 lb slab about a minute after he left, so I gave him that one as he was pulling his massive patrol boat out. I didn't catch his name, but he is certainly a nice guy (although he is a green carp fisherman). He will appear in big fish pics--if you see him, he is one of the good guys.
Most of the action was on minnows, but there was some interest in jigs. The crappie haven't hit a long-shank jig hook since spring...only short shank.
Also, I found a second hump today! It's smaller and less defined, but it was good for a couple quick 1.25ish fish. Hey--it's one more spot! A couple came off the pvc as well.
I'm about to prepare some big fish pics...including one very uncommon shot!
17"=2.80 lbs
Great job Jeremy.....it won't be long now....just think if these still had eggs. The three pound club is coming.

No pot-bellied pomoxis to report this time. The fish were where they were supposed to be. They were just smaller. I caught 15 crappie and all of them were 10"+ but nothing approaching 2 lbs. The winds were from the east, and the weather was unseasonably cool. Did that shut off the big bite? Most came off hump 1, a couple from hump 2 and a couple from the PVC. That's all I had time to fish--I had to work the next day after all. It's Trillium seed collection season! Hey, it was a good day! I had fun!
Now that I've been a member of Crappie.com for over a year, it is really interesting to look back at the posts a year ago. Monday will be exactly one year since quick report #2. I'll give a comparative report.
good job crat...keep the reports coming.
Crat, I would pay good hard earned money to sit in a boat with you all day. Not for the crappie (that would be a bonus) but just to learn everything there is to know about plants and fungi.. Love It!!!
Take care
BigFish...
Well, I'm no mycologist! About the only two fungi I know anything about are Morchella esculenta and Morchella elata (white and black morel). But then again, about the only two fish I know much about are Pomoxis annularis and Pomoxis nigromaculatus (white and black crappie). Ironic.
But plants are my greatest passion. Let me know when you want to go fishing and then lets go. I'd be happy to go on and on about plants. Your only fee is a couple dozen minnows and being stuck in a boat forced to listen to continuous horticultural bla! I certainly can't tell you everything there is to know--I don't believe anyone posesses the lifespan needed to learn every plant...not even merely by their first names!
Sounds like you know more about plants then you are letting on...it takes one to know one after all. PM me sometime--let's go.

I fished a split day since i had to work midday. I primarily caught fish on the original hump. The the morning, the hump was covered with 1-1.5lbs fish and by noon, I had landed 25 keepers. After work, I found that they had moved off the sides of the hump into 9-10', but were still hanging exactly 7' down. The average size increased as evening set in. The first fish I caught int he afternoon was the 2.36 lb slab. The 2.02 lb fish, caught in the morning was skinny considering it was almost 16" long! But the days big fish was nicely proportionate--and its eyes were cloudedlike it was going blind. A couple fish hit jigs in the morning...but nothing once the sun hit the water.
Big fish pics will be posted soon.

good job Jeremy....I wish I was as organized and detailed as you.
so do you put your love/knowledge of plants to work in your career?
PopPop,
You should see my room. My clothes are arranged all over the floor.
Todobien,
My love/knowledge of plants is my career. I am the reasearch guy and plant recorder at Plant Delights Nursery. Sometimes I like to break away from work and go fishing!

I managed to dodge the storms after work. The fishing pattern was off--I think the nearby storms and SW-NE wind shift may have had a role. The white perch and green carp were rampant. I caught several bass 2lbs-4.25lbs. I caught around 50 white perch up to 1.25lbs. Fortunately there were a few crappies mixed in. The 2-2lb+ fish came as the first and last crappie caught. I hope the undesireable fish vacate soon! I can't afford that many minnows!
Never got a jig bite.

great job crat! got to get together soon, that way you can teach me some of your techniques!
great job j. do you ever find a nest of small fish in that city lake? just wondering because we have a problem with that around here.
Simpleman,
99.9% of the lake is filled with tiny fish. In fact, my first few times out there, I would catch dinks as fast as I could put my hook back in the water--I thought that was all that was in there! Then there are a few places that all I catch are 9-12" fish. Then, of course, there are a couple great spots where the big fish rule! I've never known another lake that ranks its fish so dependably by location.
But this is another reason why I feel somewhat obligated to let them go most of the time on that lake.
good job crat....sounds like the "hump" is producing. I found a hump in the middle of Tuckertown one time. Wished I had marked it, I have tried to find it again but with no luck.
What is a good way to get rid of black carpenter ants on one of my Catalpa worm trees?

had any worms on the tree yet?
todobien.......They have come and gone....they are usually on the trees in late June and early July. We didn't have as many this year as in the years past....normally there are so many, they eat all the leaves off the trees. I don't use any pesticides or fertilizer in the yard....as the worms either comes out of the ground or they burrow back in the ground beneath the tree, not sure which but I am concerned anything like that might kill them.
Yeah I didn't see many on trees I watch either.
todobien....I told you wrong...there were a few on the trees in late June and early July. I went up there to mow yesterday. They are back....one of my trees was almostly completely stripped of leaves. Here is a picture of a few my granddaughter and I picked up this morning crawling around on the ground. There are hundreds on them on the trees. I don't ever remember them being this late in the year before. We are thinking about trying these for some channel cats in the next few days.

poppop,
I talked to our pest control expert. He said he uses attain to kill ant colonies. Again, I would suggest that a carpenter ant colony is somewhere in the tree. Happy hunting!

It's pretty clear that looking back at last year's quick reports, I have fished less than half as much this year as in 2008. That's how things are though. My job has called for a lot more hours, and after work, I'm usually gardening in the waning light.

The bite was off today. The fish were sparse on the hump, and the ones that remained were hugging the bottom--that is the first time this year that they were not suspended. The jig is starting to muscle into a little better share of the action.

Today was a carbon copy of the last couple months--except for the last 15 minutes. I ran out of minnows, but decided to spend the last few minutes with a jig--why not? I dropped down and got no bites. Then I decided to flip/troll it 4'-7' deep around some around cover...instant bite. The first fish was 2.78 lbs. Then on the next 3 flips, I pulled in 3 more fish between 12" and 14". After that, pulled in one more, missed a few, then the bite ceased. I know a certain coworker who will be thrilled tomorrow! I will post to big fish pics soon.

awesome crat.....you gotta post a picture of that hawg slab.
I see you're tearing them up as usual crat, way to go! I recently moved but still not far from the lake. I may see you out there someday in the near future. What kind of jigs you fishing?
Whompus Cat,
I was flipping a 1/16 oz short shank w/ gold/chart tube. The short shank seems to make a difference and I know without a doubt that the Raleigh Lakes crappie prefer gold/chart.
