Once the wind calmed down, I thawed a bit. I ended up with about 25 fish, but only 7 were of size. The wind chill this morning reminded me of many an Illinois Novemebr day on Lake Shelbeyville.

Jeremy, you're probably right about the temp, but I've never had to break ice to launch the boat down here. Did that plenty of times on Shelbyville.
being from s/e nc going to boot camp at great lakes i remember thinking" the summer should be nice up there" boy was i wrong.hot as hell and it rained maybe 2 days in 2.5 months.then once it cooled down seemed like it rained or snowed everyday!

I and PG24 had a very productive day. Together, we hauled in about 100 fish. No monsters, but our biggest 10 weighed between about 13-14lbs--several 12+"ers. Most of the action came on a bottom bouncing rig, but when we started catching fish as fast as we could get our bait back in the water, the jig worked great and caught the largest couple fish. It was also beneficial to use a jig, because we eventually burned through 8 dozen minnows. Until about noon, we caught no crappie less than 30' deep; but suddenly the fish moved shallower and the average size and action increased dramatically.
Today was also a reassuring and edifying day for me. I looked at a map and said, "the crappie will school up here." PG24 and I boated a couple miles to the spot, and as soon as we let down, the action began. We caught about 80 of our 100 or so fish there--and no schools of boats to offset the schools of fish! The spot looked enticing on the map because it reminded me of the spot the now defunct C.A.S.T. national championship was won a few years ago on Oklahoma's Lake Oolagah. During the two-day event, the crappie were coralled into a relatively confined area amid their post spawn migration.
But who knows, maybe everyone, including the Rt64 brigade, filled their boats today. I hope so:) And if not, It sure was a beautiful day!

Falls certainly didnt seem to be giving up any fish to me yesterday or the boats that I could see and talk to from shore. It was a beautiful day though. The boaters with finders said there were plenty of fish in the 30 foot deep water suspending at about 21 feet but they just had lockjaw. I caught a couple at the end of the day. That was it. I think the boat out from shore a bit caught 4 or 5 all day. Another boat out on the point wasnt doing anything either and that spot usually gives up fish when the other areas are not producing. Oh well today is another day.

Once the rain drifted through, it was pretty comfortable out there. I caught around 20 of my 27 keepers during a hot streak from 10:30-12:00. A bottom bouncing jig rig I cooked up last night seemed to be the ticket. It's a 1/8oz jig on a loop knot with a 1/2oz sinker 18" below. It's nothing original, but it worked great! The jig bite all but stopped after that, and it was minnows after that. No monsters today, but I caught several 12"+ and 3 that weighed over 1.5lbs.
I was just going to fish in the morning, but...uhhhh...I kind of lost track of time. Oh well, I can always stick to my schedule next time.

The fish were biting, but PG24 and I didn't come to fish as much as we came to "find" new brushpiles. From about 8:15-11:00am, we "found" 9 new pieces of brush in extactly the places we look foward to finding them again in the near future. I finally had the chance to try my new Mister Twister Electric Knife today and now I'm about to fry up some bonus crappie for a small gathering at my house. Contemplating bundling up again tomorrow:)

The temp was warmer, but it felt colder than yesterday. The bite was inconsistant and I'm thinking if I brought some minnows the fishing would have been a little better. I don't like to use minnows when it's so cold because I have to get my hands wet more often. Oh well. I kept fish two consecutive days...I think that's a record for me. Until next week.

It was nice to be out on the water. At times I had 4 poles out, but I had my best bites near the Ebeneezer Bridge finesse fishing one pole--checking each root and branch along the channel edge. I caught a few dozen small fish, but once I began to settle into a concentrated pattern, the average size improved. Of the 11 I took home, 5 were right around 12". I lost one crappie that was easily 13"--you may never hear me say this again, but I blame the hook! I later switched hooks.
On another note, I pulled a 19" bass out of about 27'. Expectations were high until it flashed gold--but it was still fun. She's still swimming out there for a restless bass fisherman to hook into. Speaking of which, I saw a bass fisherman idle under the Ebeneezer Bridge wearing some sort of mask. It looked like a cross between a Jason and a Spiderman mask. I guess it was to keep his face warm, but I was tempted to toss some candy into his boat anyway.
The boat will stay dry tomorrow.

It was slow for me on Saturday. I saw others catching them...but I think I was holding my pole wrong:) Sunday, I built a stone wall and watched football. All in all, it was a good weekend. Social next weekend!

Beautiful day for fishing! An even better day for a social. My best spot was a chance find. I was fishing open water and temporarily snagged some wood. I threw a bouy on top of it and pulled 6 or 7 of my 12 keepers off of it. Yardwork tomorrow, but I'm tempted to follow a fishing lead.

Warm and windy! I was finally able to excersize my right to bear arms! Me and Skiffless tried a new area for crappie. We did well. There were several other boats packed on the spot, anchored, using minnows. I set Skiffless up with the jig rigs and he outfished me on quality. I caught the same boatload of small fish on minnows that those around us were catching, but the only person I saw consistantly pulling in nice fish was sitting behind me. I was also the only boat fighting the wind--that may have helped. Several times I watched my rig on the depth finder as I lifted it up to a suspended fish, and several times I saw myself set the hook on the fish. Thanks for coming along, Skiffless!

He's being modest. I had the best seat in the boat watching crataegus reel in fish after fish. Fishing sloppy seconds has never been so good. He fished two rods... I fished two rods. The highlight was watching both his arms go up in unison as he hooked into a double.
Interestingly, we fished brushpiles and caught.... brush. We fished schools of fish and caught... fish. Go figure.
He's not kidding. He fished directly underneath the transducer. I was also watching the depth finder as he raised and lowered his rig to match the signature depth and more times than not, "Thump!", he hooked up and reeled one in. The man knows his electronics.Quote:

Did yall fish around the bridge? We were about 100 yards north of the bridge. No electronics just using 1 minnow and a 1 ounce weight. Caught 20 about 6 that were keepers.
Good job Jeremy. I remember when I was young and tough and could only fish on weekends. I would go regardless of the weather. Now, I just wait for better conditions and go when I don't have to fight the wind or rain.
The first time I caught fish by IDing them on the locator and moving my jig up or down to them was ice fishiing on Clinton lake. An older gentleman looking for something to do came out on the lake and was watching me and my Humminbird. I caught 3 or 4 fish by moving the jig to the fish and he left to go to town and buy a portable locator. It works!
Fishhead: I own a Lowrance GPS combo. I don't remember the model off hand, but it is a small screen model. I've heard a few people say their Lowrance has not been as dependable as mine, but I guess that's the luck of the draw. In my case, the unit does what I paid Lowrance for it to do, and supposedly, it will do lots more that I haven't learned to ask it to do yet. My only issue so far stems from the realtiy that very few large companies can afford quality customer service reps in this age and Lowrance is no different. Whatever brand you get, get a GPS combo!

Skiffless: No, I'm not being modest. You caught the two largest fish and I was just cleaning out the niners for ya. The only substantiative problem I see with your fishing technique that you reel on the wrong side!!! In fact, I think most people reel on the wrong side. Now I've got to switch my handles back the right way!

I prefished today so I could have some spots ready to show my dad tomorrow. The fishing was good. Most fish caught were keeper size. My hands got really cold for a while!

My dad and I had a great time. Found some good fishing, and found a new spot, too. It was nice to end up with 25 keepers, and caught a total of about 40-50. We're hitting the Raleigh area lake tomorrow after a tour of Plant Delights Nursery--going for a trophy. Jigs outfished minnows.

My dad hopped back on a plane Tuesday morning. I'm glad he went home happy--no real big ones this time, but good fishing considering the weather (although being fresh out of the Illinois icebox, my dad thought it was balmy). The wind won on Sunday, so we did some yardwork and plotted our strategy for Monday. Success..we found another new spot near the dam. Coincidentally, the only other boat we saw all day (literally) was trying the same area for the first time too. I'm not ashamed to say he was outfishing us. This man knew how to spider rig some mean jigs. But hey--he was also happy to share his techniques with us. That's what it's all about--sharing what you love. He obviously loved fishing--because he was out there fishing in the same stiff frigid wind we were! The 32 keepers boated weren't quite as large on average as the 25 from Saturday. I think there were a few more males in the mix.
I won't be on the water as much for a couple weeks--Plant Delights Nursery is hosting their winter Open House the next two Friday/Saturdays. Visit plantdelights.com (not your typical nursery website) and stop by during open house and say hi!

Try the cove directly west of the dam. I think there is a ramp in the back of it...Poe's ridge or something. Lots of fish in there Monday 18-30'. Good luck!
