    Default Fishing line choices

What are you spooling up with. I only use spinning reels with 6 pound mono. Having issues with coiling when I use them for throwing beetle spins for white perch or small crank baits. Any ideas on proper way to spool up would help also

I use 4 & 6# on my spinners. I've always laid spool down with label up and filled that way. Also found good to cut everything off and let out 50-75yds of line while moving and drag line, it'll get twist and curling out. I do that every couple trips. Can also pull off in yard and stretch to get out twist. Reel back on with nothing on end of line and it will help get twist out. $0.02.

    Good info from BKay !!

You can also slow down the process of getting twisted line when casting ... by not using a wrist snap to cast. Use a smoother casting motion. Snap casts can cause the lures to "spin" in the air, twisting the line as they go.

Dragging the loose line around the yard or behind a idling boat will remove twists, and tying off to something and stretching the line BEFORE you go to the lake will relax the memory coils that have set in between uses. It will also give you greater casting distances, because the line is limper and straighter & shoots thru the guides easier (less friction).

I generally use mono. Thinking about trying Berkeley fireline or nanofil any thoughts on these. Before I move away from the coast I used power pro. I tried braid but it is so small and light I was getting caught or wrapped around the rod tip by wind or just grabbing my rods out of the holder.

Some time laying the spool with the label up does not always insure you are putting it on correctly. I will start with the label up and put a little bit on the reel. Put some slack in the line and see if the line twists together. If it does turn the spool over and you should be good to go. I am pretty sure the instructions on most new spools will tell ya the same thing.

Forgot to tell ya about reel magic. It helps with reducing line memory.

This. When you're spooling lay the spool flat and start winding. Wind a few times and then put some slack on the line and if it starts to twist then you know you're doing it wrong so flip the spool over. Now continue spooling and you're good, you'll notice when you put slack in the line there is no twist if you have the spool the right way.

I don't know how many times I've gone fishing with a "newbie" and they show up with line twisted. Ruins their entire fishing experience!

For chucking small lures like beetle spins 4lb mono is perfect. I use 6lb for vertical trolling.

Couple more things that may help you out with the line twist.

you will never prevent it from happening unless you start using braid. You can spool it correctly and cast rooster tails for a day and you will start to notice line twist. Even with the line twist you should still be able to fish with it without many issues.

Never over spool line on a reel. Too much line can cause nasty loops in the line and the line twist just adds to the mess.

Always flip your bail with your hand. Never let it flip when you start your retrieve. After you flip the spool with your hand give the line a little pull. Lots of time if you have line that is curling up real bad it will make a loop on the spool after you flip the bail. If you end up with a loop in the line and dont notice it. The next time you cast it usually make a nasty mess.

Dont forget the reel magic. This wont prevent the line twist but it sure does help. Just the line being spooled on a reel will cause line twist even if you never cast it. Using the reel magic will soften the line up and reduce what I call line memory.

CHANGE YOUR LINE. I fish for white bass in the spring. I cast rooster tails every day for about 6 weeks. I usually change my line 3 if not 4 times every spring. I always keep a spool in my bag.

    Hope this helps.
