Thread: Some Screenshots from Jordan

I wasn't planning on posting again this week, but found some good fish today and thought would share a few of the screenshots. One thing that Charles and I started two years ago was to fish somewhere different on Jordan every time we go. Obviously, we can't do that during tournament season, but have started it back up again. Yes, it was hot, humid and lots of bothersome boats, but the only way to be a better fisherman is to spend time on the water.

Most of where we fished today was completely new to both of us. We launched at Farrington and thought about White Oak Creek, but once we went up there with the electronics on, decided to go down to the area around the dam. Pretty long run, but ended up worth it. While my wife watched the Olympics last night, I spent about an hour studying the Navionics Web-ap. Even though we fished somewhere new, I wanted to spend plenty of time looking at the topo lines to decide where to fish. The Navionics ap is free, so whether you are fishing from a kayak or million dollar yacht, there is a lot you can do by "pre-fishing" at home.

One reason we chose the area down at the dam is because the lake has been up and down over a foot the past two weeks. The thermocline did not hurt fishing today at all. One thing that Charles and I were pleased about today is we took the "fishing environment" that nature gave us and were able to catch fish. In the crappie tournaments, there are some very good fishermen that we compete against and the one thing the best do consistently is to adapt to the conditions of the day and still catch fish. We are by no means in the same class as many of these fishermen, but we are trying to put in the time and effort to get better every time we go out on the lake.

As you can see in the first three pictures, we found some good fish. Problem was, we could only get a few to bite. Plenty of bait and crappie, but very few bites. We kept changing jig colors and different depths, but not much luck. The first two pictures show we were in a good spot. In the third picture, we did find success on this point. We went back and forth three times across this area and caught several fish.









It was getting close to lunch and had been a fairly poor day so far. I had studied the topo across the channel and thought it may hold fish. This turned out to be the best thing we did all day. In one 30- minute stretch, we probably were catching a fish a minute. We didn't keep any of the fish, so they all went back in the lake. Also, a lot of them were small with one being what we call a tournament fish and several in the 11"-12" range. With the water temp at 91, air temp in the 90's and plenty of ski boats around, I felt this was one of our best fishing accomplishments this year.

These three screenshots are what every crappie fisherman dreams of seeing on their fishfinder. We didn't catch a single perch--what you are seeing are crappie and some baitfish. If you are fairly new to crappie fishing, try new places like we did. And, guess what? None of these fish were caught on the so-called "Jordan" crappie colors. I'm not going to share what color worked best for us, but it completely shocked us what caught the most fish.

Glad the Navionics web app can be a help to you. I looked up Belews and it doesn't have the 1' topo like a lot of lakes, but at least you have enough topo lines to help. If you look at Jordan or High Rock, you will see they are in 1' increments.
