    Default crankbaits on down riggers?

Going to Hickory on Sunday for a little striper action. Will have my downriggers with me. I noticed all the crappie are deep now. Has anyone used the downriggers to get bandit crankbaits to them in the winter? If so any tips or pointers for me to try if the stripers are not doing anything. Think it is worth trying?

Somebody may chime in, but Mississippi is the crankbait capital of the world. Try posting there.

Would it be tough to set release light enough that line would pop loose? Could maybe use a light rubberband from line to release clip?

Like todobien said, I would think if you hooked a Crappie you would not get a release and end up dragging the fish around until you pull up.

white crappie like the cranks, blacks not so much, you will occasionally catch a big black on one but its not a consistent thing especially this time of year, if your lake has whites then go for it, for instance last week i thought hey ill pull some cranks and just see if i can improve the size i was getting, pulled through an area and zippo, cut them off tied on jigs and caught a pile of them this lake is predominantly blacks, hope this helps.

Howdy cw. I use down riggers a lot. I've caught 100s of crappie on them as bycatch. Never had one pull the line from the clip. But you will notice the rod tip moving up and down when you hook one. Just snatch the rod up to jerk line from clip and wind the fish in. Works great but you have to keep a close eye on the rod.
