Great story, keep it up, I am fixing to go long lining.

Good job! When you do this how much line do you let out, how heavy are the jigs, and about what depth do you end up fishing? I want to try this sometime!

What a great post and outcome
Good for ya

I would never have thought about this, but it seems to make sense to me now that you mention it.
Some of this I have no idea of. Line out was just a good cast out behind the boat. One of the jigs was a 1/8 and the other was slightly smaller. I was given the second jigs by a neighbor who wasn’t sure of the weight; it was just what he has used for years. The depth of the jigs is totally unknown to me.
With that said, there are many recommendations on how to find out some of these answers. We just wanted to give the technique a try and what I described was just the down and dirty to a quick start.
We need to do some experiments on jig depth. Since that is dependent upon line size, jig weight and speed of boat we need to make some gear decisions first. However I had to get the wife invested in the technique, before I could get her to commit to a day of tackle experiments instead of fishing.
When I long line out of the back or off the front i use the rod length to determine the distance for instance 12' I'll go 24' 10' I'll go 20' and so on that way you have them out a different lengths
I use 1/8 and 1/16 oz jigs with a very small split shot bout 6" from the jig also the speed will determine the depth
Hey - congratulations on a good job! I'm glad ya'll caught some. Always good to have a little "beginner's luck", so to speak. Sounds like now you are excited to dig in and learn the details. I've long lined in spring and fall with success, but never had good results when they're deep...but that probably depends on the lake a bit, too.
Great report! You are blessed (as I am) to have a wife who loves to fish! Have you looked at the co-pilots for the Minn-Kota trolling motors? If you could add this, you could let the trolling motor navigate, to a degree, while you're 1st matin' for your wife!
I just added one to my old version 1 powerdrive and look forward to putting other people in the front seat while I drive from further back.
