    Default New spots

What do people look for when they're trying to find a new fishing spot? What different things do people look for on the fish finder?

I usually hook a tow line to Hunter and Jordanlimit and let them show me the hotspots.

After listening to a lot of guys on this chat board I got a topo map and looked for water that dropped from 10' to say 30' real fast. I've also found a couple of honey holes by going in and out of a lot coves until one paid off. Fish a lot of places but be patient. I've fished several spots on Jordan and went hours without anything then in the blink of an eye they turned on and I was reelin' them in like crazy.

Last September through December, Charles and I tried to fish somewhere different on Jordan every week. My grandparent's homeplace is under the lake, so I have been fishing it since day one. We went places that I have never even fished before and most of the time, we found fish. One thing we found, and sometimes it could be from one week to the next, is that there is a certain depth, let's call it a comfort zone, that crappie like and will be located at that depth. If there is plenty of food available and a comfort zone depth, you'll find crappie.

One other thing--we absolutely do not fish structure. We use our electronics to stay away from any kind of crappie condo's or other structure that will create chaos with our lines. We tight-line, long-line or bottom-bounce just about 100% of the time. Structure in the water means tangle-ups and headaches. We focus on suspended or bottom-hugging crappie and have been fairly successful. This Fall we will be out on the water continuing to focus on new areas on the lake. One thing I have learned over the years at the crappie tournaments is that the really good, successful guys got that way by spending lots of time on the water.

Time of year has alot todo with it, As im sure you know, look for bait in the summer, dropoffs, and structure, depends too on how you like to fish, this time of year, trolling, casting a jig over structure, tightlining, nightstalking, lots of ways to gettum,
I fish all over the place, and all kinds of ways, depends on who Im with too, kids/newbes can have a hard time fishing over Structure casting a jig, I started putting condos out many years ago, some produce some dont. gotta put the work in, and spend alot of time on the water, try putting some condos down in 15 FOW and in 20 to 25 FOW. when the fish go real deep in winter or the hottest part of the summer, I fish the sides of the channel. Have fun, PS lately my 17FOW condo has been producing.

When you're long lining how do you know what depth you're fishing at? Do you mainly do it with jigs? How fast do you go?

I saw this recently. It may help you. I know it take some practice to get it right. I don't use this as a measure myself but you adjust to what the fish want. Sometimes it's a slow speed they like and then sometimes it's faster. Good luck if you try it. It seems tin is heavier than lead on a couple of depths and speed.
