Thread: Roanoke River Stripers

My worst fear of going upriver in high flows has always been damaging the prop and then not being able to control the boat as I head back downriver. After your experience it makes me more concerned about anchoring in the heavy current and the perils of getting the anchor back safely. Had a buddy about get taken out by a large tree that suddenly came drifting downriver at them. No time to haul anchor had to cut it loose and haul hiney so the tree wouldn't take them out/down.

Corps and Dominion Power changed the plan due to some issues. They will be sticking at 15,000 cfs vs going to 20,000.

Where do yo get your info on projected flows? I would like to look them up as well. Thanks!

Was there last Friday with my son. We caught 53, had 4 over 18" but tossed em back to keep on growing. River flow rate is pretty high so we drifted alot. We did see right many anchored up live baiting doing ok too. It was sporadic though, would get in a section and catch them pretty good, then nothing for a while which meant crank up and go back to the good section..lol

Sat - Tues 15,000, Wed 12,000, Thurs-Fri 10,000 of course its all subject to change depending on how much rain falls above Kerr this weekend.

At what point is it not safe to fish the river? I am going back on Monday.

3000 flow, rocks everywhere, its at 21,000 now, thats humming, but very fishable, just make sure your motor starts well.
seen yaks out there in 20k, and house boats. lol plenty water to float in there now.

Its weird when its that high it actually looks Slower! Don't let looks fool ya though. Just be aware of what's going on and its a piece of cake!

If one uses common sense it is fushable much higher. Flows move fish around. Sometimes up into trees. Let know if going monday as I may.
