    Default Lower unit oil change

Alright, getting ready to change the lower unit oil (gear lube) for the first time but I wanted to see if you guys had a quick and painless way to refill. I started to get the cheap plastic pump from Advance and just pump in the oil. But do you guys do that or just squeeze it in from the bottle like the Mercury manual shows? I know it's not complicated but just looking for the best or most recommended way. Thanks.

Either way is fine, but the cheap pump is a lot easier on the hands. Older guys, like me, who have weakness or pain in the hands would definitely benefit from the pump. The pump, at least my pump, is slower than the squeezing method. Keep track of the little washers that seal the plugs. It's really easy to not get them put back on and then you've created a mess (I know from experience). Once a little water gets in your foot, it's hard to get all of it back out.

Use the pump-- less mess and much easier to deal with.

I like the pump. I've been using it for 6 years and had no problems. My boat is not in a heated area so I make sure it is a warm day and I put it in the sun s the oil will warm up and flow good. Good luck and don't forget the trailer wheel bearings.

I bought the pump today and I'm gonna give it a go this weekend. I'll also throw some grease to the bearings. As always guys, thanks for the input.

The pump also allows you to pump lub in and let it sit for a few minutes so air will be pushed out by settling lub as it fills all cavities!

Don't forget to change the seals on the plugs as well--they are a one time use item--just fyi

I like the pump also. Screw the pump tube in the bottom hole, keep pumping till the oil runs out the top hole. Make sure you put the plug back in the top hole before unscrewing the pump, less oil will flow out of the bottom hole when you remove the pump tube.
