Try Rhodes Pond Just north of Godwin on hwy 301. This is a state park and all the deep water is near shore. There is a partial dam that runs almost across the lake and the deep water is on both sides of the dam. No cost to fish but it is well patrolled by NC Wildlife. Lots of Crappie, Bream, Bass, Bowfin, and yellow cats. Cape Fear river is also good but not much bank fishing.
