When crappie fishing falls, this is where I buy minnows. Always lively and healthy.

Anybody heard anything about a new bait & tackle shop opening up in
downtown China Grove. It was in the paper back befor Christmas, they
had planned on being open in Feb..

this makes no since at all, but since we have been bragging about a few of these places the counts have gone down. i give up. i'll be buying a pound at a time from minnies. hard to cheat on weight. guess now i've got to build a minnow tank.

Simple I hadn't seen either one of those two people at Spartans Express that gave the good counts lately...they remodeled the store....and a new lady has been working the last few times I went in there. And come to think about it...I don't remember seeing the minnow tanks since the remodel. That is what I am going to do..buy a pound from Mimi's and be done with it.

I tried making my own tank and keeping minnows one time. I had to change the water once a week, really needed to twice a week. Plus I wanted an AC powered setup so I ended up using a battery charger which worked until the power blinked one day and I didn't think about anything until later on when I found dead minnows and that ended my attempt at keeping my own minnows!

I got an old Coke round barrel cooler...the kind you see on the floor of convience store with the drinks and the ice in them, it has a drain built in.. I got a air stone from Wal-mart, and a good aerator from Hills Minnow farm...I used an old battery charger...leave it plugged up all the time...to run the air stone and aerator. I also have a cheap filter system from Wal-mart. I use the Better bait stuff that turns the water blue. I keep this in a solid cinderblock building with a cement floor, that was orginally built for a meat house. It stays cool in there. I can keep minnows for several weeks or until it turns really hot. I just go and change most of the water ever couple of days...when I change the water..I have some chlorine remover I got from Wal mart..just a capful cleans the water. My problem is when I leave my house..to go to Tuckertown, I don't pass any stores to get minnows, so I try to have some on hand.

The minnow tank at Spartan Express is not visible unless you lean over the counter to the left of the checkout counter. I bought minnows there today and got a real good count. The fellow that is usually there when i stop in was working today. I like the ease of pulling in and out of their parking lot.

I forgot to mention that most of those minnows came home with me today. We didn't find many takers. Fished out of Buddle creek today and man was the bite super slow. Only caught 4 and they wouldn't keep. Guess I will try them in the pond across from the house tommorrow.

Store across from Alcoa plant in Badin, right at the landing, has minnows for $1.50 per dozen and it's self service so the counts are always good. Minnow Pond store on 24 just outside of Albemarle has them for $1 a dozen and you will usually get one or two bass minnows in the bucket.
