Jared gave a great tip a while back. He would practice by working small creeks. That way you have a good idea what you are looking at and running the boat is a little easier. I'm still learning but that really helped. Don't be afraid to leave the rods at home so you aren't tempted to do what you already know. I know I tend to go back to 2d because that is my comfort zone.
