It seems like when I use to leave my battery maintainer plugged in all the time, the batteries would boil out a lot sooner. It was supposed to step down like yours, but I think any additional charge going into the batteries will cause them to eventually boil. Now I charge mine 100% when I get home, then unplug. I plug the charger up again the night before I go fishing. My batteries seem to last a lot longer now.
