Default Trim: Couldn't go two trips without something not working right

Trim works going up every time. Down works after an intermitent up or hold down for 2 seconds let off and then down again and it will move most of the time. Pulled the wires to the motor and touch them to the battery. Up and down work both directions. Not the motor. When the down doesn't work, it's reading only 2 - 5 volts. When it works it's getting 12.5. I think I need a new solenoid.

Check and make sure your ground cables are good.

does that sound familiar Mark, remember when I had to have you tap on my relay box to get mine to go down on tourney day.

Kit not sure if your rice burner has two solenoids but lots of outboards do, if so exchange them and if your problem goes to the up trim you've isolated the issue. Ah the joys of owning a boat.

Had the same problem with mine Kit and it was the relay.Should have two one for up and one for down.Switch them like Kaz said and see if it changes.
There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

The contacts are clean at the grounds. I'll pull them all apart and cleaned them up.
I'll switch the contacts and see if it affects the up the same way. No other solenoids to use that are the same design.
Last time i replaced the trim motor three years ago I pulled all the contacts, cleaned them and covered in dielectric grease to keep them from corroding. That kept the terminals clean, but I did have a corrosion issue with one of the wires inside the plastic terminal head.
I see I can get a used solenoid on ebay for $70. New one will run me $210 including shipping.

That an expensive guess, better make sure its the solenoid then.
