Back several years ago just after the Corps purchased the land for Truman my uncle decided to go deer hunting. My grand parents owned alot of bottom and hill land just kind of south of the old town of Fair Field. One of my uncles also owned alot of hill land down in that area that joined my grand parents. Well my uncles land joined the Corps land and he decided to go down and deer hunt. He hunted most of the day without getting a deer. Walking back to his pickup he saw a group of hunters that had set up a camp on his land. So he decided he would drive up and check them out. Well the guys were kind of drunk and they only had one deer hung up. And they were really proud to show this very small deer off to my uncle. My uncle looked and the so called deer and it wasn't a deer at all!! The boys were so drunk that they had killed a coyote and field dressed it. My uncle didn't say anything to them. He got back in his pickup and drove straight home to Kansas City and never ever has been deer hunting again.
Old DW's Rule #1 never take your wife deer hunting!
I had an ex wife (notice I said EX WIFE), she alway complained that she never saw me during gun deer season. So she told me one summer before deer season that she wanted to go deer hunting that fall with me.
So being the nice guy I am I took her up to Walls General Store at Blairstown, Mo to get her a new deer rifle. Note I already had a Winchester 30-30 model 94 and a Remington 30-06 model 742. These were either too big or not good enough for her. And she had been told that she needed a 243 to hunt with. So up at Walls she found a Remington 243 model 7400. So we picked out a big scope and had it all mounted and ready to go. I told her at the time that a 30-06 was the only way to go period. But what do I know I just her stupid husband. She had heard that she need special shells for this gun. She wanted 85 grain hollow point boat tail shells. Well I ended up driving all over southwest Missouri trying to find those darn things. I purchased 6 boxes of shells.
And so now I had to go out and find her a pair of orange coveralls, knife, shell belt, hunting boots. Ok so your getting the idea now of how much money I have spent for someone who has never even fired a gun before let alone ever been hunting with anyone before.
Opening morning comes, I send her down a fence line to the corner of the property. I go to my tree stand and climb up and get ready. I can clearly see her with my binoculars and told her not to shoot my direction and I wouldn't shoot towards her. I told her that after she killed one just call cattle and I would come to her. I am getting settled into my tree stand and very happy. When I hear bang! I looked over at her thru the binoculars and she wasn't moving. Ok I wait, I hear nothing and she is still not moving. OK maybe she shot herself or someone shot her. Down out of the tree stand I climb. Walk over to her about 1/8 mile away. You alright? Yeah seen a doe shot at it one time it didn't drop just walked away. Ok dumb dumb you have a semi auto just pull the trigger and empty the gun on them. Back to the tree stand climb back up into the tree. Hadn't been there for 10 minutes, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang! No movement, no cattle call nothing. Climb back down out of my tree stand walk back over there. And all she could tell me is this doe came out and I emptied the gun on her and she just walked away! I couldn't find no blood trail nothing. Now I am PO'ed major by now! Deer season is something I really look forward too! Back over to the tree stand, decide what the heck aint climbing back up in that tree! I am just going to lay down on the ground and take a nap because my opening day has already been screwed up! Less than 30 minutes latter I am about half asleep and I heard something running thru the brush! Dang a large doe! Ok I am flat on my back with just my head up against the tree. Grab the old 30-06 & fire oh no! There is a buck running right behind this doe! Wow and all I can see in the scope is horns! And it don't help that these 2 deer are running past me less than 15 feet from me. Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, no deer is falling all I am seeing is white tails running away from me.
Well you know who shows up right away! Yep, here she comes! Where is the deer at? Running over the hill! Dang you if I wouldn't have had to mess with you this morning I would have a trophy rack on the wall!
Well I took her gun away from her and told her to stay at the tree stand. I left her my gun and I walked almost a 1/4 mile and found my buck dead, 10 point almost a perfect rack!
No deer for wife that season, before the next season she demanded I go get her a 30-06 and of course it had to be gloss! Plus she wanted another new scope! She ended up killing a small doe that year! She wouldn't shoot the buck with her because he was too pretty!
I ended up with both of her guns in the divorce plus all of mine!:D
Made sure that before I married PW she didn't deer hunt! Thank god PW only fishes! And PW keeps both our tackle bags full of jig skirts! I haven't hunted in a few years now and I have not missed it. I have a wonderful wife who even helps clean the fish and also keeps the boat clean!
And I have a nice buck on the wall, 2 crappie and 1 pheasant! Still thinking about getting a quail mounted but PW says I have enough on the wall already.
I was 13 hunting with my dad and cousin in Ceder Creek MO, got there on Thursday, bow hunted Friday morning on a loggin road in someone elses stand. Didnt see nothing. Saturday morning, opening rifle season hunted about 200 yards from that stand still dark and a jeep drove down the Loggin road and dropped a guy off at that stand and kept going. So after about two hours of hunting I decided to go back to camp and then it got bad. Dad came back to camp screaming" Theres a dead guy in the tree!", I could see the guy from where I was hunting and i thought he was standing, but he was actually hanging from his bow hunters safety belt! A guy had to get on my dads shoulders and cut the straps. It was so quiet that morning you could here the saliva hit the ground while he was still hanging in the tree. A hearst drove down the loggin road and got him. My dad talked to his buddies and they said he had a heart codition and wasnt expected to live much longer. They think it was a heart attack. And yes we stilll hunt!
Good stuff Dan......lmao!!!
:mad:Oldest doesn't want to go deer hunting this year.
Dan I would say from the story you for sure made a heck of a upgrade in Paula. She is a great gal to put up with you year round and heck even put up with Me Bugs Monk and the gang during camps hell she even cooks for us and I must say cooks very well for us to. Better be nice to her or she may take up deer hunting. $$$$$$ catch my drift. Fishing is expensive enough.
