KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban on Sunday ordered their first public executions by stoning since their fall from power nine years ago, killing a young couple who had unsuccessfully tried to elope, according to Afghan officials and an eyewitness.
The punishment was carried out by hundreds of the victims’ neighbors and even their family members in a village in northern Kunduz Province, according to Nadir Khan, 40, a local farmer and Taliban sympathizer, who was interviewed by telephone.

As a Taliban mullah prepared to read the judgment of a religious “court,” Mr. Khan said the lovers, a 25-year-old man named Khayyam and a 19-year-old woman named Siddiqa, defiantly confessed in public to their relationship.

    .
    .
The couple eloped when Mr. Khayyam was unable to persuade family members to allow him to marry the young woman, identified by authorities only by her first name, Siddiqa. Siddiqa was engaged to marry a relative of her lover, but was unwilling to do so, according to Mr. Khan.

    .
The couple eloped to Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan, staying with distant relatives, but family members persuaded them to return to their village, promising to allow them to marry. (Afghan men are legally allowed to marry up to four wives). Once back in Kunduz, however, they were arrested by the Taliban, who convened local mullahs from surrounding villages for a religious court.
After the Taliban proclaimed the sentence, Siddiqa, dressed in the head-to-toe Afghan burqa, and Khayyam, who had a wife and two young children, were encircled by the male-only crowd in the bazaar. Taliban activists began stoning them first, then villagers joined in until they killed first Siddiqa and then her lover, Mr. Khan said. No women were allowed to attend, he said.

Mr. Khan estimated that some 200 villagers participated in the executions, including Khayyam’s father and brother, and Siddiqa’s brother, as well as other relatives, with a larger crowd of onlookers who did not take part.

People were very happy seeing this,” Mr. Khan maintained, saying the crowd was festive and cheering during the stoning. “They did a bad thing.”

pull all our boys and girls out then turn all that sand to glass

A gun, like any other source of power, is a force for either good or evil, being neither in itself, but dependent upon those who possess it

I'm really not even clear why we are over there.I know all about the"defeat terrorism world wide",and it may be working to a degree.A lot of them just move around from country to country, and we will be like a dog chasing its tail.Iraq isn't any closer to being stable than when Saddam was hanged.Thousands of years of infighting between the tribes, different villages, goverment, let alone outsiders.

Saw a report last night about a private security firm(easy to guess) that said it is far cheaper to bribe the local Taliban to let the conveys through than try to guard them.

I really am not sure the trillions we are spending is worth it.I'd like to see 1/10th of that to just guard our borders and try to prevent any inside attacks.

Does it make sense to any of you that virtually since the birth of our great country we have sent our future (sons daughters, husbands wives) to foreign lands to fight wars? As a two tour veteran of Viet Nam, I am as proud of my service to my country today as I was then. In my later years, however, it bothers me that there is always SOMEWHERE else to send our children. In a world that only understands violence as the ultimate attention getter, I believe it is time to take an extremely tougher stance. I don't believe any third world countries problems have ever been "solved" by a war. To that end, give them what they understand the best, which is violence and ELIMINATE the countries and their "problems". Really, think about this before you write me off as a nut case. We send OUR SONS, OUR DAUGHTERS, OUR HUSBANDS, OUR WIVES to other countries who place NO value on human life and NO value on the rights of others. People who just don't give a damn. Why on earth would you want to protect/help that? Does any politician REALLY believe sacrificing young American lives will make a difference to these jagoffs? I know some of you out there have loved ones in the service of our country, and I truly pray daily for their as well as ALL Americans safe return. We have the technology to stop all of this. Bring Americans home to their families where they belong and nuke the rest. All we need is a leader of this Nation with the balls to say enough is enough. Eliminate the border crossings as well; SHOOT 'em the second they cross. They will either get the hint or not but either makes no difference to me. Think about it.
