    Any
    wildlife taken into actual possession, unless
    released unharmed immediately, shall continue
    to be included in the daily limit of the
    taker for the day when taken.

    Here is what the law says, so I would guess if you have your limit and continue to fish and hook a crappie in the gills and dies that would be considered your 16th fish and you would be fined. I also fish with only thirteen or fourteen in my possession to be on the safe side. I learned something new today.

    Haven't had a problem with a quick limit in a long time! But I think the last time I did, I started dragging the bottom in search of a few walleye. Also I have used the extra time to graph out some new areas that I had wanted to try but couldn't get away from the spots I had confidence in and it paid off in future trips.
