Default Why are these fish so dark?

Ok so who knows catfish? Someone told me they blend into their surroundings. Our pond is clear but does have a dark muddy black bottom. My son caught this from our pond while I was at work, he told me 10lbs shhhhhh - he's becoming a REAL fishermen.

The male channel cats get dark when they are guarding the spawning nests.

Oh that fish is very fat and in great condition! I would sure hate to scale him and bet he wasn't 10 lbs. But no matter the weight it is a very nice catch!

yup, spawning male channelcat. they get very dark, their lips and cheeks swell up to the point that some folks mistake them for a huge bullhead or even maybe a flathead.

Bill, all of the info you received is incorrect. When the catfish are dark like that it is a 100% guarantee that it is caused by overpopulation of fish. The only way to remedy that is to remove several of the fish, drop them into hot grease and share with your buddies.
Give someone a fish and you feed them for a day; teach someone to fish and you feed them for life.
Matthew 5:19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

If you was out cutting wood and stock piling for camp I would not have to work so hard.
