Thread: Fishing destinations changing ?

Talked to guy who bass fishes on bay springs a lot last night. He thinks they have sprayed. Said last time he was over there, saw a lot of brown weeds floating loose. He’s the only one I’ve talked to about it who is not upset. Said the fish were already coming back to his deep brush, where they have been absent lately. Hope so, it would save me 40-50 miles round trip to fish there.

Toledo Bend has moved back into the number 6 spot Nationally. Louisiana Sportsman Magazine this month page 20 writes Toledo Bend is Back in the Bass because the Lake is Back in the Grass. Check it out. They are catching +13# Bass, over 10# is a regular basis. I'm not saying spraying has no purpose, I'm saying when they have areas opened up, Stop spraying there. Everyone including the Bass guys will be on board as soon as their stringer weights are reduced by lack of forage fish. A Black Bass has to eat 10 pounds of food fish to gain a pound. The forage fish spawn and grow in the Aquatic Vegetation, remove the vegetation you substantially reduce the forage fish. The eradication of every bit of vegetation in the north end of Ross Barnett will bite the Lake Management. I spend $6K a year in and around Ross Barnett. They keep killing the fish I plan on dragging my Camper to Toledo Bend.

Guess there is good and bad, the lake I’m talking about is unusual for MS, bulk of the lake is 40-65 foot, and gin clear a lot of the time. Connected to TN river by about a 30 mile canal. The weeds we’re getting solid out close to 20 feet deep everywhere, a mix of hydrilla and some other nasty goopy stuff. Can’t fish for it. The shad seem to do fine even when it’s relatively clean.

We would fish the pier at the southwest side of Piney Grove campground on Bay Springs lake. Thought we were casting into deep water. I guess they sprayed the area, could see mud last time there. Checking the lake map it's 5 foot deep in that area.

I agree with that. We were talking the other day about squirrel season starts in about 5 weeks. I remember when I was a kid how big of a deal squirrel camp was on opening weekend. I haven’t heard of a squirrel camp in 20 years at least.

WE HAD A GROUP ON THE TOMBIGBEE RIVER THAT WOULD MEET EVERY SATURDAY IN OCTOBER . 10 DOLLAR POT . ONLY 22 'S ALLOWED . 1 POINT PER SQUIRREL, 2 PTS FOR HEAD SHOT. IF THERE WAS A TIE THEY PUT A ONE INCH BULLSEYE AT 10 YDS . BACKED UP 5 YDS EVERYTIME THEY BOTH HIT TILL ONE MISSED. NEVER BACKED UP PAST 30 YDS. sHOT TILL SOMEONE MISSED .THERE WAS USUALLY 10 OR SO EVERY SATURDAY . HAD TO BE BACK AT TRUCKS AT 10:30 FOR FRIED BALOGNA SANWICHES .WOULD LOVE TO DO THIS NOW .

Western Auto would run their Revolution 22 shorts on sale for 5 to 10 cents per box. The 3 of us would get the limit a few times during the sale. Carry a few boxes with us when visiting family in the country. Us kids would target practice some and be in the woods early the next morning. My cousin found a farmer that would pay us 10 cents per squirrel and crow we got from his pecan grove. Word got around and we had every weekend tied up cleaning groves during squirrel season.

I personally think livescope has made it easier for folks who are proficient with it to choose the times when they want to fish. Years ago the simple tactics of long lining or crankbaits were the go to fill the freezer during the summer months. Only problem you had to deal with the 100 degree heat and lake lice. Don't worry during the fall / spring the traffic will increase. And I hope the COE lakes never change the 12" length limit.

Will add to that . Years past all shad balls had crappie near by .Not true any longer and certainly not as many keepers . jmo.

To my limited knowledge this is all bad information, traffic on the remaining 3 lake's and all. Sometimes folks just don't fish where the fish are. I wouldn't know I haven't had my boat out since February 28th. Probably won't have it out again until weather cools off. I hear say traffic on 2 lakes have been overwhelming lately and plenty of keeper size fish to be had. I dunno, I'm to dang busy with work to confirm one way or the other.
