Why converters anyway? They melting them down and selling the metals for drugs? I don’t get it

Thieves target catalytic converters because of the value of the metals found inside the devices. Catalytic converters are typically made up of three precious metals: platinum, palladium and rhodium. The value of all three metals have risen sharply in price in the last decade.

Converters are worth more than the rest of the exhaust system metals.

They can cut one off in about 2-3 minutes or less they sell them to the black market scrap dealers mostly where they get $20-$50 bucks each which makes it real quick easy money!
I sure would have gave him 50 bucks not to cut mine it cost me almost 700 to get em replaced and you would think since I have the vehicle fully insured that they would have paid but they said no because they insure the vehicle not its components!

Church vans are the easiest target. Converters super simple to reach. A pastor in my county had one stolen out of his van while parked at Harbour Freight in Brandon. Was in the store 10 minutes. On the way home he noticed things didn’t sound right plus rattling. Stopped and checked it out and yep, the converter was gone.
