Thread: Went for a swim

This guy was a friend of a friend of mine, he was a defensive end at Ole Miss in the early nineties so some of you Mississippi guys may have heard of him, he went overboard fishing out of a small jon boat and never came back up. Had his 2 small sons with him, they both had lifejackets on but he didn't. I usually only wear mine while the big motor is runnin but since hearing about this I'm considering investing in one of those inflatable life jackets and just keeping it on all the time.

I do wear my self inflating vest all of the time. I can't swim too good and at 68 don't figure I can get back in either. Thing is if you fall out and hit your head on the way out about the only thing that will help is a buddy close enough to help or a self- inflating life preserver.

I've been overboard once about 10 years ago. Me and two other guys in a 16' rental boat on Lakeview. Still to this day I can't say what happened, one minute I was in the boat dry the next minute wet. Luckily I was in my late 20's I was able to bounce back in pretty quick, just had to have the other two shift their weight to the opposite side. If I recall correctly water temp was 58 with morning air like 50 and warmed up to 65 by noon and sunny thankfully cause we kept on fishing the rest of the day. I make it habit to wear my life vest in the winter and like Speck. I keep a towel, heavy coveralls and thick wool socks in the boat for a quick dry / warm change of clothes. Need to get me an inflatable and get it the habit of wearing it in the summer months as well. Never know what will happen when you hit the water, best to be prepared.

Everyone should try getting back in boat while fully dressed and preferably in full winter gear (in the summer of course). It's a lot harder than you think. I installed a long flip down ladder on the back of mine for this very reason.
