Thread: Trolling rods

I have had bnm, ozark, southern crappie, and they are all a little different. Bnm Capps and Coleman are super sensitive, have to be careful swinging larger fish in with them, nice rods tho. Ozarks were good, just bowed the rod too far towards the handle for my liking. Southern crappie rods are tough and great running light 3/8oz rigs up to 1 oz. only change I made was painting the tips. I just ordered denali rods, which are not cheap btw. Bang for your buck would be ed at southern crappie. Great fella btw. He overshipped on the rods and would not let me repay him for the extra pole.

They aren't for 2oz for sure. With a jig and weight I never get over an oz. They aren't for power trolling. they bend from handle to tip and are very sensitive. I generally use 3/8,1/2, or 3/4 oz weight, a 1/8 oz jig and gnat double rig with minnows. I've only broken a rod trying to reel in a rooted stump if a fish farts near your line you'll feel it in the rod.

the capps and coleman are awesome for very light bites. I preferred less than 3/4 oz on mine. Like KDavid said, if a fish looks at it too hard youll see the tip move. Southern crappies are not quite that sensitive, but i feel like i see all but the lightest of bites. in my mind, if they bite it that light im probably gonna miss em anyways

I use bnm 14'pst's for pushing with 2 ounces of weight. If the lakes were slick all the time I would find a stiffer pole, but to me they are the happy medium...stiff enough to handle the weight and fish.. limber enough to absorb some of the wave shock to keep your baits from jumping so bad

I have the 2 oz Southern Crappie Rods, and they work fine for spiderriging & pulling crankbaits, or pushing cranks with a 3 oz weight. I also have 14ft B&M BGJP's, and I like them too.

If you want stiff, the older crappie maxx used to be stiff as a 2x4, havent bought any in a while but still have a few in the arsenal for pushing 4oz rigs
