16's don't seem that much longer in a boat. They look like a mile on dry ground tho.

Baitcaster reels, easy to let line out and swing the bait to ya. If fish 18s pulling cranks and wouldnt hestitate to use them spider rigging if I thought I needed them. Boat size has a lot ot do with it too, in a shorter boat a long pole is a pain in the rear, in say a 20 foot rig a 16 foot pole is not a big deal. I have pretty much settled into the 14s for rigging but dont mind the longer poles except for when storing them.
