Interesting reading in this thread. I'm in Va but very interested in what is being said. This spillway is below a dam? Are the crappie moving up to the spillway, swiming upcurrent?

Mostly come through the spillway.
Bert, our dams have a tunnel spillway. The water from the upper lake enters the gate tower goes down a tunnel to the spillway. The spillway area is lined with stone called rip rap.
On this link the first picture is the gate tower. The second picture is the emergency spillway, overflow spillway.

Thanks for taking the time to post the links. Looks there could be a good amount of current at times. Most of our lakes are feed by rivers, wonder if our crappie move upstream the way yours do. I guess I'll have to go find out.
Well I tried to post the google images search results for, Sardis spillway but it did not seem to link. If you do the search you will find multiple pics and get a real good idea of at times looks like combat fishing.
