The only time I use "hardlines" trolling is when I need to go to a thinner diameter to get the bait deeper. Example would be to take a #4 Salmo Hornet down past what 150 FOL (feet of line) would take it with mono - 10 pound test fireline has the diameter of 4 pound mono - and at 150 FOL would take the bait 2 to 4 feet deeper. If you are using Superlines, you will need to "wrap" the line around the releases or use an Off Shore "Snapper" release.

I also don't use hardlines around timber - it has a tendency to "saw" into the wood and the crankbait snap gets stuck. When around timber I will switch to 17 pound test Trilene XT Solar. When the rod tips and the boards start shaking from "rubbin' the trees" - I will stop the boat and let the baits and line "float up" off of the trees and then troll forward until I see the baits moving through the trees again - then repeat the stop and go process. This also triggers strikes. In open water we call it "ringing the dinner bell".

I use size 4, 5, 6 and 7 but mostly 5 and 6. The 7's are a little "radical" in the action department, especially for cold water crappie. Earlier this year, we smoked 'em on 5's and 6's at Lake of the Ozarks using a diving device called: Tadpole by Off Shore. We caught most of the fish 20 feet down but some were caught as deep as 60.

Tommy how long of a leader do you run from the tadpole to the lure and how do you adjust for the dive curve with that set up. And what's the advantage of that setup over off shore snap weighs

Thx for the price tip Mrdux. Got mine today. May not be as good as the Offshore, but they were cheaper to learn with, and they look fairly close to my buddy's OR-12's. I am gonna replace the rear clips with my Offshore ones. I've been using them for snap weights so I have a bunch of em.

Good video on how to make your own tattletale flags. I made one and it works. The hint is to use a washer thick enough to prevent cutting into the styrofoam.
