I've caught them Yankee crappie before. They're just a bit bigger than our minners. :-)

Yep. From what I have read, it seems that our average Mississippi fish may actually be a little smaller than them crappie up north of the Mason-Dixon.

Heard that Maine is very overlooked as far as crappie fishing. Few crappie fishermen and scads of slab crappie. Don't understand why there is no Maine forum.
Crappie bite twice a day. 15 minutes before I get there and 10 minutes after I leave.

I saw a thread and some pics from up that way somewhere, and the guy had several pics of 3lb+ specks. Looked like a great place to fish to me. I saw these on C.C.

The big ones don't hibernate in summer. They just lose a bunch of weight. That 2 1/4# fish was probably close to 3# in spring. I have caught 17" fish in summer but they weren't even close to 3#.
