10 mph+. Forget about it. Unless you prefer to swim with the fishes.

The thing about it is this...if you don't mind getting wet don't worry about it. I fish out of a 14' boat, and I'll put it anywhere I want any ole time I want. However, it needs to be said that I don't have much money in it, and I always wear my life jacket. Also worth noting is the fact that I ain't very smart. Winds are funny.

I've heard people talk about west winds, east winds, hard winds, and light winds, but at times, it does not matter which direction winds are coming from or how strong they are. I've been sitting out in these lakes, and some of the worst winds I've encountered have been straight down when there were no other waves on the lake. The reason I didn't sink is that God didn't want me sunk right then. It is the reason why I keep my phone in a waterproof container and my life jacket attached to me at all times.

Any big hole of water is dangerous, and if you ain't willing to lose it, don't take it out farther than you can drag it back. I don't care if the winds are calm, and the weatherman says it's going to stay that way. They do not know what God is going to do.

I have gotten stuck on the lake twice. Once at Sardis when the wind went from 10 to 30'in a matter of minutes and I had to beach it and sit there for hours until it calmed down enough to get back across. Other time was the same afternoon the storm hit the marina at Sardis and I did not get back to my truck until around 11 that night. Both times it came in on me quick and both times I was in a small boat like your 14 footer. Best advice I can give is to watch the weather and wind directions. Even when the wind is not blowing try and keep a look out for places to fish when the wind is blowing. Basically scout the places you may not even be interested in fishing that day. It really helps to know the lake and know u can fish any where on it in any wind. A lot of guys can tell u about the fruit jar day on Sardis this year and I can tell u that the wind never bothered me and my boat had a limit by 10 o'clock. I did not fish the tournament but wished I would of after I saw the wind that morning. Ha.
