    Default Question

Okay, I think I lied. It may turn out to be more like two or three questions.

First thing is this: what is a gnat?

I do not think folks on here are talking about them pesky little biting flies, so when folks say they fish with gnats, I am guessing that they are referring to something different. Is it a little jig or what?

If it is a little jig, does it have a little hook? Ain't bigger hooks better? Dodgeman was nice enough to set me up with some of the biggest hooks I have ever seen on a jig head, and they catch fish like nobody's business. Probably the best thing about them is that, when they hook a fish, they rarely ever let go of a fish.

When I am wading, I will sometimes use a smaller hook/jig setup, but for trolling and fishing deeper water, the bigger hooks/jigs seem to do the best job.

Somebody please show a picture of a gnat so I will know what folks are talking about.

Thank you fellows for the pictures and links.

Is it a "gnat" because it is handmade? I have jigs that are store-bought that look very similar to these you are showing me. Are the ones I have gnats, or just plain ole jigs? They say jig on their box.

How you would delineate a gnat? I don't know that it matters really, but I like to know what folks are talking about. I have always heard that the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked, but I do not entirely subscribe to that line of thinking.
