Metal ring goes on the line running from the mast to the planer board. After setting lure back desired length, I clip the fishing line into the padded clip. Next you let out the more fishing line to move the metal ring closer to the planer board.
When a fish hits, it generally snaps the line out of the clip and you reel in like you would do any longlined caught fish. Occasionally you will have a small one that won't release, then you just reel the line taught and snap the rod and it will release. You can tell if your plug is fouled or small fish by watching the line vibrate where the ring is (just like you can tell by looking at a rod tip on normal longline). Oh yeah, once released from the clip, the ring will slide toward the planer board. So be sure to have plenty of rings.
Much easier for me to use a mast than to use an inline planer board which slides down the line to the fish, and having to unclip the planer board after ever caught fish. For use with the mast, I like a longer and double board.
What about turning, any different?

Slightly wider turns, due to wider spread (inside cranks will want to stall and float up). Of course you can speed up in the turns, if you need to make a tighter turn.
I assume the clip slides towards the board with the ring? Wouldn't you need a bunch of clips too?

Got another question, say you got 5 lines out on your main and the number 3 line gets a fesh. How do you replce that one just move your rods up one and put it to the inside?Am guessing that same length rods would be fine witht his set up as well??

You will need plenty of clips (minimum of 2 dozen). Janns netcraft has clips with alligator clips that work ok OR you can use offshore tackle clips (or any other brand release) with your own shower curtain rings.
If middle line catches fish, then take inside line and let out line. The ring will slide down planerboard line, just stop it when it gets to the middle spot. Let new lure out on the inside.
Setback is constant for all rods. Yes you can use same length rods (or various length) as the planerboard line is what is keeping the spread.
