Best thing to do is to contact the resort or where ever you are staying up there and ask them to recommend guides. Find out from the guide you select what tackle you may need. A lot of the guides have websites and they are generally pretty full of information. There are smallmouth all over Minnesota; we even catch quite a few in the Mississippi right in downtown Minneapolis. This website may be a place to start: Northern Minnesota Smallmouth Fishing | LIVESTRONG.COM

Enjoy yourself. That is wild and beautiful country. It is also easy to get lost in; so I would suggest that if you have a handheld GPS that you bring that along with enough spare batteries to keep it working should you need it. While it may be redundant if you hire a guide, it doesn't hurt to take the extra precaution.
Smallmouth were not originally native up there but were stocked in starting over a century ago with colorful tails surrounding that introduction. Tales like pouring cream cans full of fry into virgin waters off railroad bridges. They have done very well apparently without displacing much if any at all of the original fish species.
