I do too! You left before I got there. I setup my tent, put my ez up over it with the sides on, put in an electric heater and bought a cot. It snowed!

Had been trying to get a prototype BB Rod to a potential customer, so while everyone else was up @ Houghton, I was driving, and sleeping in the back seat of the truck @ Harbor Town.
Got on the water late by fishing standards, Heck by Steve standards, It was probably nap time...:dono that was 7:45ish.
Due to the morning waves, I intentionally motored down to the River Rasin basin, turned with the wind, and started trolling. NNW
I ran the 2 BB Rods for most of the whole morning, and, the very first fish was a Walleye, that was 28 inches, 1 Dang inch short of a Master Anger. For those that are not aware, the Mi DNR Patch this year is a Walleye.
Anyway, I started with conventional method, released the bail, and let the BB hit bottom, then pause, and do it a second time, and lock the bail. After getting both BB Rods set, I noticed that the tips were steady. No bites, no noting, so I started tinkering, and continued to release line until I could detect the BB ticking off bottom. To my surprise, I had to go from 40 foot, to 57 foot of line, on the counter. (These were not calibrated) but it was enough line, that the difference none the less that surprised me from the conventional method, of locking it at the second bounce.
Please note, that I did not let out 103 foot this time. :Rofl BUT that worked too, I caught fish...:ThumbsUp:ThumbsUp
As soon as that first rod started ticking the rod bent over and drag went out. I was still looking at it, and my initial though was WTF did I snag?, and then the rod started bouncing, FISH ON,
I was treated to that first fish. The nice Mr Walleye, of 28 Inches. So I put the fish away, lowered the other rod to the same depth, and saw the "Tick" I was looking for, and then set task to getting the first rod back in the water. Before I could get it, the second rod went off. It was a Sheep, but that was OK, as I was testing Rods.
That is how the morning went the next 45 minutes until it slowed, rod A, then Rob B, back i water, Rod B, then Rod A, even had a double of sheep, at least 3 times. I added one more walleye, and numerous sheep. I could not keep both rods in the water for very long.
I know people are not interested in Sheep, but I was testing, so it was fine with me. Anything that would pull back for me to test the rods was a bonus. I even got a bonus Catfish. I had one Sheep that was HUGE, and the Rods performed much better than I anticipated.
I tinkered with my planer boards for a bit as well. I had issues, BIG SUPRISE There, OE fishing and issues? Who'd of thunk. :Rofl
I was using a generic St Croix Avid for my Planer boards, with Smimano Symmetry spinning reels. I did not want to canabalize my Salmon gear for Walleye setup for one day of fishing, so I grabbed some other items sitting around.
I see Kevin, and Rich Laughing now, but it worked, it was UGLY, but I made it work and caught a few fish on those as well. Line out was not the issue, the issue was being Solo, and disconnection the planer board. I lost about 3 fish while disconnecting. I found I had to reel that planer board dang near to the tip of the rod in order to not lose the fish.
By 11:00-ish I had my limit, packed up and called it a day. Met up w/ some people, handed over the prototype rod for further testing.
I placed Daiawa Acudepth on them for the reels, I got the 17 (Smallest size) I like the size for Walleye, however there are some weird things that I am not used to as I am so used to my Depth Master III for Salmon.
The two things that are most prevalent t to me are the clicker button, is at an angle, how I hod the Rods. Not an overly big issue, just annoying to me, second is that the star drag seems to need to be rotated 500 times before drag starts to kick in. The paddle handle to me was not an issue.
Overall, I could get them for all my Walleye gear and be happy, just some getting used to I think, the bonus, was I liked the small size. I am going to have to snag a Depth Master III size 15, to see if I like those better before I get more Accudepth though.

What the heck is a sheep? Some kind of drum?
Sent from my iPhone using Crappie.com
Fresh water drum aka sheephead here in Michigan.
You will see us say "Farm Animals" meaning Sheephead aka Drum, Catfish, if you catch one of each then its "UnDesirables"
I had a conversation with a friend of mine a few weeks ago in relation to what we call "Undesirables".
I found it funny that, what we consider as unwanted or undesirable fish, people in other states love them and cannot get enough of them. His comment was actually a pretty good analogy: We are blessed with some of the best tasting fresh water fish in the united states, although the others are good on their own, they do not compare to what we are blessed with catching. So you cannot compare sheep (Freshwater drum), white bass, catfish, or other to our walleye, salmon, steelhead, and perch species. On their own they might be good, but, we "target" one or two particular species and the rest of them are just non target fish.
I've always wanted to try sheephead as I have heard they are similar to mullet but... when you are catching walleye and planning on a fish fry, we simply don't keep them because we are not fishing for them. In other parts of the US, they love the heck out of white bass, sheep, and other fish. We are lucky to be able to go out and catch 100 white bass like they are going out of style. Most don't eat them. Not because they are not good, but because they just don't hold a candle to the bounty of other fish we have out there.
Yesterday was the first valid attempt at catching fish in the new boat.
As usual, the trip came together in a matter of minutes, via texting. Skillet & I & Skillets friend were headed to Lake Erie.
Tried calling Steve, got a message he couldn't talk, then my phone rang, Steve was like "I don't have stuff ready, Rods, etc." Said, you have warm clothes? "Yeah" he says, "Then you can go, that's all you need"
Then I woke up, and he had other obligations, so it was Skillet & I, and his buddy, Dave.
We had a hell of a trip down, as it snowed during the night, and at one point, the ice on the roads, caused the back of the truck to go one way, trailer to follow, and then Super Sir Nasty the Ginger on the wheel made a correction as he watched his new boat whip around behind, and follow the truck. When it (The trailer, rear of the trailer, that is) came back to the left in a swing, a slight left turn of the wheel made everything straight, and that left turn kept it from swinging back to the right, or worse all the way around.
No more cruise control, the rest of the way......Tight sphincters maybe the rest of the way, but no cruise control.
Oh I cant remember if this was before or after, but we blew up a gas station in Howell. Avoid the gas station on the south side, just off the East bound exit.
Upon arrival to the area, we stopped at Domka's, and I got a replacement clip for one of my planers, and Skillet & Dave who didn't really need anything each walked out with at least a $50.00 hole in their pockets.
I escaped with only a $12.00 and change hole.
Got the boat uncovered, and into the water, rod holder's in place, and we were ready, away we went. When I got the boat, I was warned that until I got used to the DTS (Digital Throttle Sensor) I might be knocking people to the floor. Before we left Bolles, as in less than 25 yards from the dock's, I knocked Skillet & Dave to the floor. Dave came up with a new term. "Throttle Whipped", and it wasn't the last time for the day.
We then had to figure out a "Thumping noise" and found unknowing to us that the Wash-down pump had been turned on. Got hat shut off. and all was well.
We motored out, and set course with the wind and waves, While setting boards, Skillet had one go off, while he and I were settings rods, Dave says, I just want to net, you get it. Skillet gave him that Dad look, and Dave said, Ok, Ill get it. So he grabbed it, and then I took it form him, said, Grab the Net BI^&H, and I caught the first Walleye in the new boat. More on Nets later
Later in the day, Skillet got a nice 28 3/4 Walleye, and he then let it go. Wait WHAT? There was a firm discussion about my boat being Catch & Eat, and not catch & release. When asked "Wheres my conservation skills" I jokingly said, he couldn't make it, he was home, but next time"
We trolled around, We went from Lapistance Bay, (I think I spelled that right) to Breast bay and acquired most of our fish in Breast Bay.
At one point we went to move and I looked to my side, and there was Dave again on the floor, says to me "I'm fine, just keep going" another time, he just go on the floor, that was funny also.
We may have named the boat "BEAST" because it literally is, there is so much power, and so much torque that its a beast, and Dave coined the new phrase "Throttle Whipped"
It was impressive the way that it handled the waves, and chop, and that was me, being second trip ignorant, and probably not having the trim adjusted as well as it could have been. As I get used to it, it should become even better.
Kevin will have to chime on on how he thought it handled, as I am not overly knowledgeable about the Erie, but if its any indication I will absolutely LOVE it on Lake Michigan, chasing Salmon.
To boot, we never hit full throttle. Just once, to show Dave how sensitive it was, he landed on the floor again, He was "Throttle Whipped"
Onto the graphs. Need to figure out a few more things, to make them more usable, need to learn more about the tracks, and what not, the sonar Data overlay was pretty interesting as it did not match the map allot of the times, but was/is kind of useless as the Live Sonar although cool, would take FOREVER to map all of Breast Bay. We had no trail's and the press the button 2X to save a way point was annoying. I pressed the dang button, MAKE THE WAYPOINT. some things are going to be a struggle until I get used to the small nuances, of the Lowrance's.
Netting: I had my standard nets, and in the old boat they were fine, but this boat, I see the advantage of an extendable net, like the Ego2 nets, while fishing with others. There was one point, where was one point where we had to net over one rod line, but under another. It was quite the acrobatic feat, but successful none the less. Could it have been easier, yes, but for what I have right now, I'm good, but an extendable net will be in the future.
We ended up with 12, 13 if you count the one Skillet let go, in all a good day, educational on my part, as I was learning the boat, and nuances, of it. It may have been easier in some better conditions, but in all, not overly bad, and not a 3 person limit. The fun and laughter had negated the lack of a limit, not that the limit was the goal. As time goes, and I get used to it, the fishing should become better overall.
Upon arrival back in the GR area, it was directly to the car wash, and a soap, and rinse of the cover, boat, and trailer to get any and all road salt off, from the morning drive, then tucked away into the garage, tho THAW. good thing was, the garage is pretty well insulated, and within 40 minutes the ice on the boat was gone, and the cover was just "wet"
Tonight I will heat the garage, make sure the cover it dry, then remove it, and start on the carpet with some fans, and get a cleaning on the boat its self.

Be very careful with that “ Throttle Whip “
I did that last summer without thinking and my son Jr. Almost went right out the back, he seriously landed up against the motor.....I will NEVER do that again!

awesome job guys!!! way to brave the cold .braver than I am...
as usual, nice entertaining story.
those are some FAT fish!!!!!!!!
It was a great day on Erie in December, the bay is loaded with fish and the “throttle whip” is real. The boat handled well considering arron has a good learning curve ahead of him with that sensitive throttle and the added HP. But overall I truly like the setup.

In hind sight, The "Throttle Whip" could have been easily avoided.
See, most people, would say, lets go on a nice flat or some what calm day for the first trip, and get used to it. *Cough Monday it was FLAT*
OOOOHHHHHHHHH NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Not us, lets go NOW, when there is two footers. We go 2nd trip, and what would have truly been "less than desirable" in my smaller boat.
However, we are truly deranged, as every time some one was "Throttle Whipped" they got up SMILING, and LOVING IT. Dave slid to the floor once and his head was right next to my seat, I looked down, and started slowing down, so he could get back into his chair, and he says "Keep going this is AWESOME, just don't crap your pants, I'm to close to your BUTT"
So I kept going.
Yup, we are weird like that, but sitting in your seat, when the boat takes off, is very desirable. Funny thing, we were FOREWARNED, and yet it still occurred.
Steve, we were in no danger of any one going near the back deck. That cockpit is so large, and there is so much room. The canopy was removed for more room, and we moved two seats while trolling.
No one is allowed on the deck when I am moving anyway, trolling & jigging, yes, but not under way.
That said, that throttle is so, shall we say, so precise and elegant, that its is going to take some getting used to compared to the smaller boat.
It was truly AWESOME, for everyone.
I have time off Christmas week, and if it stays open, I may try and make another trip, but not exactly sure just yet.

This weekend looks good [emoji57][emoji57]

Cool write up OE!
Sounds like a dream ride, as soon as you get the throttle tamed.

New video from Saturday on Erie
https://youtu.be/gYpc9Qa_dQw
Has anyone ever tried hand tied jigs for walleye on the Detroit or Saginaw Rivers? I tied up some 3/4 oz today and an chomping at the bit to catch something on them.
Sparty,
Um,
Where did you find hair long enough to tie on a 3/4oz Jig?
VBottom is bald so we know it’s not him.
Anything from your trip you didn’t tell us??

Good points, Erin. I save the beard hair for crappie jigs and can't reach mt back hair so I used mostly feathers with a couple made with hair from a deer tail
I could have offered you some authentic "Ginger" hair for those, if I had know before Saturday.
Saturday was the annual "Don't you think its time that was shaved off" comment by the Mrs.
