That picture does tell a story, and I will get to that shortly. This needs to be known first, as it make the translation of the story
Also since Quotes do not seem to work, I used all BOLD for QUOTED words.
Salmon will swim into a school of bait fish, and smash them head first to STUN the prey, then circle around and eat it, head first, while it is stunned.
They will also grab bait fish by the side, middle, tail, etc, and take off swimming at a high rate of speed. (Think those initial BIG Salmon Rips that people talk about, that is whats occurring.)
That bait fish, while in its mouth, is transported at a high rate of speed, usually backwards fro the prey, and water forced though its gill's backwards, and its "DISORIENTED" at that end of the run, They OPEN their mouths, and let go or said bait. they then circle around, and eat disoriented prey fish. This is also when the SPOON get let go of, and a missed hook set occurs.
So back to the story in the picture. When that fish attacked the lure he came from the RIGHT side, and hit the spoon in the middle/rear end of the spoon. (I would have to go check the teeth marks to be 100% but it was one of those two area's.) Then attempted to swim off with it, The spoon is horizontal in the mouth, and the the hook is 180 or 360 degrees, either straight up, or straight down, depending on if the spoon is right side up or upside down. In this case the hook was in the bottom jaw, so the spoon was right side up. Assuming the fish is swimming upright.
So the hook was pointed down, and its also KIRBED, (Slight bend, so that it can drive through better.
Here is a link to a Great Lakes Fishing Discussion on Treble vs Siwash hooks, it was a discussion i ran across while researching.
Siwash single hooks versus treble hooks on spoons.
My numbers done seem to lie to me though, 12/14 is was increased hook up rate. I talked with Rich Saturday for about an hour, and he was telling me that Lake Ontario, and West ward, as in State of Washington, etc, have either made trebles illegal, of are not allowed. As well as places in New York, and various others. He might be able to name them all, I do not remember them all.
