    Default Engine cutting out


    I have a Mercury classic 50.
    It was running like a brand new engine and would push the boat 29 mph. One day I was going 20 mph I hit a log. Now it cranks up in a second and pures like a kitten. It will go up to 29 mph for a few seconds then it starts cutting out. If I back off the throttle it will go 22 mph it will fine . If. I slow down for 10 seconds and gun it it will repeat the same thing it will go up to 29 then start cutting out again. like it has a limiter. I replaced the cdi switch box. Didn't help I replaced the 2 coils. Didn't help. I replaced the fuel line and put a new high volume fuel pump on it. Didn't help. The only thing left is stator.
    Any ideas?

    Whats your RPM like? Ever replace the hub after you hit that log? Im wondering if your hub is damaged and spinning, causing the motor to over rev and hit the limiter

    A131781 classic 50.
    I don't think it's the hub. It will go 29 for a few seconds then starts cutting out. It runs perfect at 22. If I speed up it starts missing. The stator is the most expensive part.

    Ok. thank you. You said you replaced "the 2 coils". Did you only replace 2 coils or does your engine only have two coils? If you only replaced 2 out of 4 coils; was it because you lost spark on two cylinders?

    i lost spark on one cylinder. it has 4 coils.I think it might be the stator

    Im thinking its the trigger module. im gona do more research

    It may very well be. I like the idea about the hub being spun because you mentioned an impact, but if it were the hub I would expect you to say that the loss of power getting worse as the hub would get worse. I had a four cylinder one time that would drop a cylinder at high rpm and it turned out that my plugs were old and the ceramic had micro fractures allowing the spark to follow a path of less resistance. We were working on it late and when we fired it up you could see the spark jumping all over the engine. new plugs and problem solved. Might be worth a shot and a **** sight cheaper than that stator will be, if you can find one. I had another that the shift interrupter went bad on and would stick so when I put it in gear with would drop two cylinders. That is why I questioned you replacing two coils, thinking that may be the culprit in an intermittent form, if that engine even has one, and I am not sure it does. It is just a microswitch that grounds 2 coils at the moment of shift, to make the process easier on the drive. Just some thoughts on it. I think a test for the stator would to be to swap coils around. Meaning check spark on all four and take one that sparked and move it a position with no spark. If you still have no spark then your issue is more than likely your stator. Others may chime in with other better ideas.

    From where did you lose spark? Stator, Wires, or plug? A timing light clamped to a plug wire can help narrow it down.
    Also, I would pull the plugs and look for carbon/trash knocked loose on them. A good plug cleaning and regap may be in order. Good luck!
