when you replace the prop seals whats the best gasket sealent to use? i have a leak from the bolt o rings. im getting ready to reseal all the gaskets in the lower unit.

Man I'm glad I found this post. Went out yesterday to check on my fuel supply, noticed a little half dollar size pool of black liquid under the motor. I thought I had a leak. After reading this, I went back out, took the top plug out, LU oil was a different color, and diffinetly a different smell. I was idling A LOT the last time out, I think its just unburt fuel. Would have never thought that. I think I'm going to change the oil though while its on my mind. It'll be the first time for me. Keeping my fingers crossed. Its a mid 80's 35 HP Mercury. I'm assuming any marine gear oil will be OK?

Most likely coming from this area. Simple fix and common on evinrudes. This is a newer motor but I would bet it is coming from the shift shaft area. Pics here for you!

Took the words out of my mouth.
I had to replace mine a while back. Unburnt residue does leave a small trail sometimes but if it's consistent get it to a good tech. Lower units are pricey.

I changed the lower end lube .. dropped it off the transom saver .. still a small amount out of that hole (its not dripping just a thin line) I ran it the other day ..whatever that hole is water streams out of it on the muffs

Hays, try and find an exploded view of your motor. Even if you never turn a wrench on it it's a good thing to know what does what and where. Iboats.com has answered many questions for me, some good info there.

That's what it is....I would bet. Drop that lower unit and replace that o ring. It will work.

I would also say it's a shift or drive shaft seal. Drain the gear oil pressure test it. While under pressure place the lower unit underwater and look for bubbles..Gear oil should be milky. Just had mine done
