    Question Throttle problem?

I got a old 25 hp outboard that i have being having a problem with. When im on the lake and i turn the tiller handle all the way around where it should be running at full speed the boat only runs at like 1/3 the speed it should and sounds rough when ideling. However some times after i have ran it for a long time it will start up great and ideling good and give me my full power. However this doesn't happen all the time. Do you guys have any ideas? I have walmart super gas in it cause i know all gas has ethanol and i thought the better the gas the better it would run?

    thanks for the help guys!

Could be carbs, but when mine did that it was either the stator or trigger. Not sure which as I changed em both while the flywheel was off. Mine is a 1985 Merc 25.

Just run regular gas in it. That motor is not engineered for hi-test. Nest time it does it check for a strong spark at both cylinders. Sounds like you are dropping a cylinder. Last one I fixed doing that had a bad switch box.

Forget the high test use 87 oct.. Sounds like the high speed jet in carb is picking something up and clogging the jet. Next time it happens try rocking the motor back and forth real hard and see if it makes a difference. MIne did the same as yours had some junk in the carb. Would give it a shake and it would speed right up.

Thanks for the help guys. I took it to the mechanic today and found out it was a switch box. Its going to end up costing me 300 dollars to fix. I bought this motor which is a 1986 25 merc for 550 dollars and now i got about 1300 dollars in it. Hopefully this is the last set back for the year. Im a broke college student lol

    Thanks everyone!

Hopefully that is it. I thought that was my problem as well and was not. Then changed both coil packs, plugs and plug wires and still was not right and then changed the trigger and stator. I feel your pain as I have an 85 merc I got for close to the same and now have about the same in it. Crossing my fingers for ya brother.
