    Default Question

Long story. I completely winterized my boat the winter before last season. I then only used the boat 3 times last season before I slipped and fell on a boat ramp last spring, tearing up a shoulder and both knees. I needed major shoulder surgery to rebuild my shoulder and then had two knee surgeries to fix my knees. I didn't get any fishing done during the season except those 3 times in early spring. I then stored the boat in my heated garage all during this past winter after only using it those 3 times. I had used Stabil before I put the boat away. My question is, being relatively new to boat maintenance, should I do something this spring? Or just try to fire it up? Oh yeah...and I'll be more careful on the boat launch for sure. Thanks for any answers.

I would if at all possible drain all the fuel out and maybe use it in a lawnmower or something else. I think that Stabil and others only add 90 days to the life of the fuel. At least that is my understanding. I would rather put a mower in for repair and fish while that is being repaired than mow the grass for entertainment while the boat is getting fixed.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. But now I got me a dilemma. One vote for dumping the gas and one vote for just using it.

    Anybody have the tie breaker?

Your are good to go as long as you have Stabil in it. No need to dump the gas. But I would fire it up on a set of muffs at the house before heading out and ensure that everything is in order before launching. You can always top off with fresh gas if it makes you feel better but I have used gas with Stabil added many time sitting for 12 months or more with zero ill effects. That is precisely what the additive is designed for. Run it like you stole it and go catch some fish.

Go fishing for sure. I've used Stabil for a lot of years sometimes up to 6 months at a time. I've never had a problem.
