You really want to run the engine as high as you can and still maintain water pressure. This will give you top speed with less lower unit drag. Two things you really need are a tack and water pressure gauge. The tack is to make sure you are not over revving the motor, and each propeller pitch will amount to about 200 rpm's. If the boat is not coming up fairly quickly it could be the wrong prop. Dogging coming out of the hole will cause detonation and will hurt the engine. You want to run Wide open throttle at almost the maximum rpms' for that motor. And needs to be ran fully loaded and just with you to get the right prop/rpm's. With out the tack you are just guessing.

What boat, engine and prop are you using, maybe we can help dial you in? If you do have a tack, what is it reading at WOT and what pitch is the prop.

1979 Ranger 18 ft. 14 1/2 -22 Raker. 1986 120 hp Johnson looper. Had a reasonable hole shot , 5600 rpm top end, but porpoise on top end. Put cup in the prop to stop porpoise . Jacked it up 3/4 in ( jack plate ) an now wont get on plain . No pressure ga. Dont really know how much higher I can go. The best I can do is keep an eye on the pee hole.
