    Default Great winter Bite!

Well finally, with the freezing temps last week the river temps have dropped below the 40 degree mark. Read surface temps at 37 degrees all day and the crappie are schooled up in their usual winter spots. They are on or close to the bottom in protected holes 10 feet or deeper. Hit one spot and didnt get a touch but was preoccupied with my new Helix 10 fishfinder and the transducer angle. Frustrated I drove back to the ramp, pulled the boat, adjusted the angle and relaunched. On the way back decided to try another spot from where i have done well in the past. Turns out the transducer was adjusted perfectly and was marking lots of fish. Ended up boating 50 crappie, one pickerel, and one yellow perch. Kept 9 good ones up to 12.5 inches. Most fish were caught casting but did get a bunch verticle including a couple of keepers. BTW the Helix 10 has autochart live which might be the coolest thing out there. You can create contour maps of any body of water you want in real time. So cool to see why the spot i was fishing was holding fish. I love winter fishing!

Nice job Zippy. I'm still using my old 797 SI. I save my tracks and use Dr. Depth to make maps when I get home. Gotta love side scan.

Yeah the wind is supposed to blow Sunday out. Fished the Route 90 bridge today and caught 35 stripers to 24 inches in under 3 hours. Virtually no boat traffic and the water was still pretty warm 47 degrees. Tried fishing the 50 bridge mid week and the water in the morning was 37 degrees! Didnt get a bite. Side imaging is awesome.
