Thread: Recent trips

Have fished a bunch over the last couple of weeks and used my electronics to locate a few new spots. Located the best of the spots near the end of one trip and went back twice since to try it out. Day one caught 70 crappie but only about 12 were keeper size. Had my keeper threshold set at 10 inches + but had to lower that to 9inch minimum to but together a decent meal. The next day out had 45 in half the time (short trip) but only had 6 keepers out of them with the biggest 11 inches. The second day was clear, blue and high pressure and the fish were touchy. Found out that if you are catching small fish try fishing at a differnt depth. This advice may have been given already to me by others but only recently saw that it actually works. Depth was 10-15 feet in a spot out of the river current. Fish were schooling and showing signs of the winter pattern but were not hunkered down right on the bottom like they normally are when the water temp drops under 40 degrees. Caught fish on the bottom, half way up, and just under the surface. Was even using a float at one point and had a fish hit that. Here is a screen shot from my fish finder to show the school. Tons under and to the right of the boat and the white lines on the left are another school moving in the opposite direction of the boat.

Thanks for the replies! Was getting tired of last winters spots and wanted something new to look at. Still gonna keep those other spots in the back of my head just in case these fall apart.

Nice photo of the yellow ned and crappie. Most of the ponds here on the eastern shore have depths of only 5-6 feet. Looks like you have a nice boat with excellent side scan and know how to use them. Thanks for the interesting report. The last couple of times I have been out for a couple hours I have not not caught too many yet.
