Spawn set back
Hit the river today in the wind and the cold. Found the main body of water to be as cold as it was two weeks ago. Seems all the rain and the cool to cold nighttime temps have set back the spawn by several weeks. Thinking back over years past I always over estimate the spawn and predict it much earlier than it actually happens. The shallows were right around 60 and the main river at 58. If I'm remembering correctly I never see the spawn before a stable mid to upper 60s. Fish are still in a prespawn pattern from what I can tell hanging around in 3-6 feet of water but fairly scattered especially with the clear blue skies and the cold front. Still managed 25 fish but all much smaller than last weeks fish. Not sure where the bigger fish are but I never found them. The deep water bite seems to be gone other than some very small yearlings. Imagining the larger males are prowling very shallow water a foot or two deep that can be hard to get to in this river without pulling the motor and polling. Unfortunately doing that on anything but a mid rising tide can spell disaster as the tide drops fast and leaves you stranded. Most of the fish caught were medium sized females with eggs so I let them all go. These fish must be tired by now of all the back and forth waiting for some stability.
