    Default Lightning strike

This story is about a friend of mine's grandson. Fortunately he will survive, not sure of long term effects. If lightning in the area best to get off the lake

Wow, I'm glad he survived and hopefully fully heals. Prayers sent. Scary stuff.

That's just crazy. Hope he continues to get better. I wonder how often this happens that we don't hear about.

Don't know how many times a boat gets hit by lightning, but I've seen a whole lot of pics online of graphite rods turned into fluff from lightning hitting them.

Long time ago I got a little "buzz" thru the steering wheel of my boat from a lightning strike in the vicinity. I was crossing the lake at idle speed on my way to the launch ramp to leave, on account of the coming storm. I don't remember hearing any thunder or seeing the flash of the strike, but I knew instantly what caused the shock I felt thru the steering wheel. It wasn't "painful", but it certainly got my attention.

I was guiding a group that fish with me every year on Saturday on Ky Lake. I had been watching the weather radar closely but a storm blew up quickly. I had the Bimini top up and we started getting planer boards and cranks in as well as four ACC Crappie Stix rods. When the guy grabbed one of the 16’ ACC poles, he got a shock bad enough it made him jump back. He went to grab it again and there was a noise that was heard all thru the boat. It was like when you get up off of furniture in the winter then touch something. It snapped. I told him to leave the rods in the holders and get under the top. When he grabbed the Millennium seat, it shocked him again. I got the boat as close to a steep bank as safely possible and we idled all the way to the marina.

I’ve experienced graphite rods humming from static electricity. It’s not a pleasant feeling!

when I helped my guide buddy back when , we encountered something like that as well , during a we should have left sooner weather event , striper typically go totally bananas right before a big storm hits and we were right in the middle of a really good bite . we were down rigging live baits in rod holders with "clicker" reels on them . As the big thunder head clouds rolled up on us and it got dicey , the rods started to have some kinda of static electricity running up and down them or the line , still not sure if it was the rod or the line but to be very sure , we both said that is about enough of it that trip .
