I'd say it's on forward ... I don't have anything set on auto that I know of. I'm still using it as it came -- no updates done. I only know about putting the transducer on the left side of the TM shaft, because first time out I had it on the right side & quickly realized I was reading what was behind me & under the boat, even though the TM was pointing forward.
